Angel Whisperer

Watching the U.S Open in golf recently, it occurred to me that in another life I’d like to be a golf caddy.

Good caddies seem to me to be these wise and inspirational muses, whispering words of encouragement and advice to lead their golfer toward victory. Ever hear of the quote from the Talmud that says “Every blade of grass has its angel that bends over it and whispers, ‘grow, grow’”?  That’s what I want to be when I grow up. An angel-whisperer.

I think I would be a good caddy, minus the schlepping golf bags part. I would definitely need a partner-caddy to do the heavy lifting while I focused on the important job of angel-whispering.

I would most definitely not be a good golfer. Or any professional athlete for that matter. You know how the best athletes have precision and accuracy under intense pressure and scrutiny? How they can make the basket with .001 seconds on the clock that means the difference between winning and losing in a championship game?  How they can kick the field goal to send their team to the Super Bowl? How they are clutch in the moments that matter? Not me. No sirreee. My husband and I agreed that my nickname would be “choke” not “clutch”. Because if I had the ball in a moment where victory lay on the line and it was NOW OR NEVER, I would most likely start sweating and crying and drop the ball and run in the opposite direction. But boy I could angel-whisper the heck out of someone ELSE who had the ball in that moment, encouraging them toward victory.

We all have our parts to play.

So, need a steady stream of “you can do its” in your ear, your heart, your head? I’ll be there. Minus the golf bag.

What’s your part to play?
