The Lion

The Lion

"Rain Color" by seyed mostafa zamani

Inspired by my blog last week about the battle between Winter and Spring, my friend and colleague Daniela Ortiz wrote this beautiful poem, which took my breath away.  I know you will enjoy it too.

**

On the first day,

Roaring seventy-degree weather

March comes in like a lion.

Beckoning early Spring

Calling forth Winter again.

Fiercely pacing back and forth,

Distressing human seasonality.

Break the cabin fever,

Thaw the winter blues.

Morning larks stir in their beds,

The sun caresses their eyelids.

Budding plants emerge from the ground,

Sweater weather is upon us.

The lion rises and bellows.

Thick, dark clouds envelope the sky,

Counterclockwise winds circulate through the air.

Winter advances from the rear,

Another Nor’easter pushes its way through,

Snow, and sleet sweeps across the city.

As Spring retreats into the distance,

The cold penetrates.

We withdraw internally,

To ward off the lingering frostbite.

Wilting, melancholic spirits

Burry themselves into their hearts,

A forever Winter within;

Completely frozen.

Fatigue,

Low moods,

Loss of interest,

Subzero lethargy.

The lion yawns.

Soft purring escapes,

Chipping away

Our eternal ice fortress.

Winter melts into the ground.

And Spring will always follow,

Despite what the groundhogs may say.

March goes out like a lamb,

Frolicking and playing

As it says goodbye to Old Man Winter.
